Great success at first GTUK England: Squad Training 2010

As has been mentioned on this website previously it is the squad committee’s aim to change the perception of squad training to GTUK  instructors and members from an elitist, ‘team only’ ‘beasting’ session to what it actually is, which is an opportunity for everyone to train together with different people and learn and progress.  Whether this is with a view to represent the association nationally or internationally, just to develop personally or just as another, different training session, squad training caters for all.

With this in mind Mr. Crisp has emailed instructors to encourage them to come along and bring members and these instructors have done a fantastic job in supporting.

The first session was held at Loughborough University last weekend and over 30 people from all corners of the country trained, some who have never attended before and this coupled with 9 lady black belts was extremely gratifying to see and a great starting point for 2010.

The session blew away the cobwebs of Christmas and New Year and left everyone looking forward to more!  Happily it isn’t long to wait as the next session will again be at Loughborough University’s Taekwon-Do centre this Sunday 31st January from 3 – 5pm.

If you were or weren’t able to make last week’s session, get yourself along to this week’s – bring a few people from your club if you aren’t quite sure!  The sessions are conducted in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and there’s something for everyone regardless of age, grade or experience!

England Squad Training

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Squad training is starting again this weekend and we are hoping to build on the successes of previous years and hopefully put to bed some misconceptions that exist about it - read on!

Squad training is a fantastic opportunity for students and instructors alike to enjoy another aspect of your Taekwon-Do training.  At present, the door is wide open for anyone who would like to get involved, whether to improve for national competitions or international selection.
There can often be a misconception that squad training is elitist and only for those who definitely want to go on internationals. Squad is essentially a Jee-Goo session, which gives you the chance to relax and just train, working with different people and instructors. If international opportunities come out of it, then that's a bonus. I would encourage any black belt who enjoys training to come along, because you never know what might happen!

The majority of squad sessions take place in Loughborough, because it is centrally based, but we are keen to take it on the road. Would you like to host a session? All you need to do is book the hall and we'll do the rest - speak to your instructor if you would like a session in your area..

Nationally this year, we have our GTUK Individuals, GTUK Regionals and GTUK University Champs. Plus, for the first time in many years, GTUK Scotland are hosting their own Goodwill International Shield in Edinburgh. In addition to all of this, we would like to take a men's and ladies' team to an ITF tournament in Spain.

The first squad session of 2010 will be in Loughborough on Sunday 24th January.  Training will commence every weekend thereafter or as the calendar of events permits. All further details, venues, times etc will be posted on the website.

I really hope to see some new faces at the forth-coming sessions. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Competition Training Blasts Back into Action!

Competition Training Blasts back into action!

Sunday 18th January was the first competition training session back after the New Year.  The competitions committee have scheduled training sessions for each weekend (with the exception of the 1st of February) leading up to the Welsh championships at the end of February.  The dates were put up on this website at the start of the week leaving not a great deal of time for people to be exposed to the dates but that needn’t have worried anyone as the turn out was fantastic and the session very well supported.

The atmosphere throughout the training was extremely positive and highly charged with all participants pushing themselves hard physically and mentally.  The purpose for the sessions was again restated by Mr. Ridley and this is encouraging the competition side of Taekwon-Do for GTUK members and indeed encouraging GTUK members to become passionate about the competition side and so push themselves to succeed and improve in all areas, sparring, patterns and destruction.

The sessions have the additional benefit of allowing the coaches to monitor student’s progress with a view to forming teams for international competitions or indeed in the more immediate future – for Wales.

The sessions are open to adults of any grade and to junior black belts and as such the coaches are available to offer advice, assistance and coaching to anyone who attends.  It’s important to stress that the competition training is not just for black belts, it’s for everyone.  The GTUK is a forward thinking and forward planning association and as such understands that the colour belts of today are the instructors, black belts and potential international competitors of the future and therefore the earlier people receive top coaching, the quicker standards rise across the board and the longer these standards are maintained with talent and skills being fostered over time.

Sunday’s session certainly blew the Christmas holiday cobwebs away and provided valuable training time devoted to patterns and a well focused sparring session that meant that everyone who attended left with something to mull over and build upon during the week.

Have you been along to one of the sessions yet?  If not ask yourself why not?  They are incredibly useful sessions in terms of developing personally for competitions but also to meet up with people you may only see twice a year at competitions.

Competition is healthy and the camaraderie built through training together only increases the competition and the respect for each other as competitors.

The next session is this weekend at Loughborough University’s Taekwon-Do Centre from 3pm – 5pm.  Cost is £5 and full GTUK dobok should be worn.

If you aren’t sure about any of the details then speak to your instructor or email this address - competition.training@gt-uk.net  with any questions you may have and I will endeavour to answer as soon as possible or point you in the right direction of someone who will be able to help if I can’t.

It’s well worth it so get yourself along!

TOURNAMENT TRAINING IS BACK!! SEPTEMBER DATE CONFI

Wednesday, September 03, 2008

After a Summer break the tournament training sessions are back!

The GTUK Instructors agreed last year to set up a committee to develop the skills of students who wish to compete in competitions, focusing on both the patterns and sparring elements. Monthly training sessions are available for Black Belts from age 12 upwards and colourbelt adults from blue belt upwards.

The aim of this training is to tap into the wealth of experience that the senior grades in this association possess, for anyone who wants to improve their skills. For those wishing to compete in national competitions or participate in future international events, this is an ideal opportunity to progress towards this goal.

The next session is on Sunday 28th September 2008 and will be once again held at Northampton Academy and will run from 11am - 2pm.

Even if you have never been before don't be put off by this, especially with the tournaments coming up (GTUK champs 1st November) it is an ideal form of preparation.

Cost of the session is £5.

The first session 2 weeks ago was a fantastic success with a great many positives coming out of the session.  The members fo the squad committee who were present and conducting the session, Mr. Ridley, Mr. Crisp & Mr. Miley were all extremely pleased with both the level of support shown and the level of committment displayed by everyone training.
